“Is that…” Eric's voice trailed off when the image sputtered and ceased. “The Architect,” Nik finished the sentence for the adventurer. The world pulsed around them in a series of clustered bursts, like the drumming of fingers on a wooden desk. The rolling rhythm filled the space between the rocks and trees. A soft echo of the first level's screams whispered through the woods. The trees twitched in jerky movements as their trunks bisected and roots pulled up from the ground. Bark split in scattered chunks to reveal glowing eyes and mouths within the forest’s gargantuan trees. “Those eyes… They’re like the goblins,” Kath stammered. Eric held his shield high as he stepped to the front and placed himself directly ahead of both the female goblin and the still unmoving Harper at her side. “Then we show them the same mercy. We put an end to their twisted existence before they can hurt any of our friends,” said the warrior. Almost as if in punctuation, the first chunk of hard earth and rock shattered against his shield, sending debris over the tightly grouped party. Another tree pulled its roots from the ground in a clumped mass that resembled something akin to a foot. As the emberwood behemoth did so, it kicked forward, sending a second ball of dirt and stone their way. With the exception of Kath and Harper behind Eric, the group split apart as the projectile landed slightly off-center of their formation. Nik dodge to his left. The first goblin to ever throw a spear at him in actual combat had just launched one from the branches of the tree. He set Ryan down, plucked the spear from the ground, and returned it to its owner, cutting its words short just as it began to speak. Goblinoid voices carried on the chant, saying, “The Tower calls the first to fall, and soon it will claim all. Now your time has also come, time to join in service to the glowing one.” From his place near the back-left, Nik thought that he could see everything, but that was before he felt the familiar sensation of scales bump against his hand and his vision spiraling away from him. Suddenly he was seeing through Ryan’s eyes, and the truth of what they faced was laid out before him. This wasn’t a battle against flesh and blood. The creatures they faced flickered with an ominous glow, but now that he saw with the fae-dragon’s eyes, he realized something. The strange light that the trees and goblins were emitting was accompanied by a very unique presence. His mind churned it over as he tried to make sense of what he saw. It’s like each of them is just an afterimage made from resonance energy. Either they’re being controlled by some power, or they were created by it. No, they were created; I can feel it. That’s what we’re fighting against now, but how does the Architect play into it all? That broken thing within his own chest began to hum with a dull energy. Nik’s vision snapped back to his own perspective just in time for an enemy spear to nearly pierce his skull. He ducked as it passed overhead, taking a cut of his feathers with it. The ringing of a bell notified him of a new quest. Quest Received! The Ghosts in the Tower: Can you restore what was lost? Seize the lingering resonance. Reward: Reignite the Spark Claim a shard of power. The battle had already begun, and while Nik was busy trying his best to gain an understanding of the full situation, Eric was doing his best to cover the rest of them. He activated a new ability, and transparent copies of his shield split from the original. The shields built out from each other in a curve to form a dome over the entire group. “We’ve got eight seconds,” he called out. Nik took stock of the rest of the group. Kath and Harper each remained frozen in place, and neither had reacted to the weapons and debris that had been lobbed in their general direction. Neither had moved in response as the trees stepped closer. He rushed to where Eric and their shaken allies were and knelt down in front of Kath. “These aren’t real people;
