The world twisted on its axis as the power of Nik’s ability shifted the pull of gravity. Despite the understanding that came inherent with the ability, the fine line where its effect ended was something he had needed to learn on his own. That had been the second time in one day that he’d been just close enough to the gravitational field to have his feet lifted from the ground. In the last twelve days that he’d been training, falling sideways was a regular occurrence, but not one that he liked the idea of having to get used to. Regeneration rid his body of the lumps and bruises that he’d sustained, but in all fairness, that also went toward slowly leveling his new celestial skill, too. He allowed himself a moment to just lie on the floor, exhausted, before he would force himself to get up. He’d spent most of his time training recently and only taking a few scattered moments to help with minor disputes and decisions. These were all small enough to give him the impression that Terk had only wanted him to be occasionally visible to his people. So, he obliged. The only problem in Candlelight that truly worried Nik was that of the missing goblins. One by one, they’d vanished while gathering food and supplies outside of the burrow’s walls, and while Nik had sent scouts out in search of them, no sight or sign of the goblins could be found. A group-system was instituted to ensure that the trend of disappearances came to an end. So far, that seemed to have done the trick, and he hadn’t heard anything about any further losses. He’d also made it a point to have regular meals with his friends. One challenge that presented itself there was that many of them were busy with their own lives and relationships within the burrow. Kath and Stics for example, had frequently started sharing meals alone, as had Beatrice and Eric. Pearl and the others also had their own friends and family outside of Nik and the guild, people they’d missed during their travels. With Ryan still sleeping, that left him spending more time with the other adventurers and the new recruits. He picked himself up from the floor, knocked the dust from his cloak, and got ready to go looking for Addy, whom he got along best with. She was less serious than David, and somehow surprisingly less chaotic than Loot. Before he left the room a voice broke through the silence and directly into his mind. A yawn preceded the words of the sleepy-voiced dragon. “Dad? I’m hungry? Can I have a coin? Or frostberry pie? Ooh, or maybe you could hide the coin in the frostberry pie?” “Ryan! You’re awake! It’s good to hear your voice, buddy. Meet me at the hollow and we’ll ask your Aunt Pearl and Granny Sorel about it.” Nik smiled a full-toothed grin as he headed in the direction of the faery tree and sent out the guild message. Replies of excitement came back from both the older members who were ready to visit with the friend they’d battled beside and newer recruits who were just enthusiastic to spend time around a fae-dragon. It wasn’t until after the overwhelming number of messages that Nik realized the faeries might not be as excited about hosting the entire guild at the last minute as they might be if it were only Ryan. That ship had already sailed, though, and there was no way he could stop them from wanting to see the finally awoken dragon. It was an interesting thing having watched over him as he slept. The first week he’d seen little difference in Ryan’s development, but every single day after that was another spike of unbelievable growth. Nik wasn’t the first person to arrive at the hollow, but he could still see Ryan clearly from a distance. When he lifted his head, his mushroom-cap was visible over the heads of the goblins. Hmm, I don’t know if he’ll be satisfied with just one whole pie anymore, Nik thought as he made his way to join his friends. Diving between hips, elbows, and knees of the group’s variously heighted individuals, he made his way in to see the dragon who had recently start
