Nik didn't wait for it to get its bearings before he struck. Black metal pierced the creature’s slick hide. The muscles tightened around the portion of the spear he'd stabbed into the beast. It fought against him as he pulled the weapon free. A single spurt of blood followed the spear’s tip before the muscles tightened hard enough to seal the wound. The thunderworm's head whipped around at them faster than a creature of its size had any right to move. Nik spun to the side, dropping Candlelight to raise his shield as the outer edge of the beast’s mouth lifted him off of his feet and sent him spiraling past Doggy. After he bounced twice, Nik rolled to his feet and returned his small light to the room. The beast companion swiped at the oncoming worm with a heavy paw. Claws struck teeth and the two rebounded off of one another. The worm lost its momentum entirely, while at the same time, the capybeara was forced back several paces. Nik stepped back over to Doggy's side and nudged the beast in the leg with his elbow. “Impressive hit, Buddy. Now it's my turn,” Nik said as their opponent recovered from the abrupt stop to its motion. In the blink of an eye, the spear he'd been gifted by the flutter-fox had been replaced by one of goblin make. Sparks flared to life along its length as Nik took two steps forward and let it fly. If the worm’s mouth never closed, then he would have to test how well it could eat lightning. The tunnel of the creature’s maw illuminated for a brief instant before going dark again. Lightning Spear ate through the fleshy interior of the beast and exited the other side. The light faded beyond the momentarily backlit thunderworm, vanishing into the infinite void of the cavern. It let out a guttural roar of grinding stone as the hole in its back was sealed by coiling muscle. “Okay, so it’s fine with eating electricity. That's… fun. I guess I'm going to have to find another solution.” Nik's black spear was back in his hand, already being plunged into the beast again. He moved away from its maw, but he was too slow. A tooth caught him in the arm. Nik jumped back, slashing and hacking at the bare hide of the massive thing. The wounds closed themselves, one after the other, as they were made. Even the wounds Doggy had made were sealing behind him as he continued his assault. Their enemy gave chase, its body sliding one way as its toothy face followed along its length after them. “Keep running,” Nik ordered. He leapt atop Doggy's back and attacked from there. They kept beside the body of the beast as the length of it curved. Blood sprayed across the mouth of the creature from its own sealed wounds as the muscles unclenched to generate its movement. “Hah! That's it! You aren't invulnerable after all,” he shouted. As if it had been in response to Nik’s words, the slithering beast increased its speed. He continued striking at the worm's hide as Doggy tried to outrun the thunderworm. It gained on them with each passing moment, and Nik almost slipped from his place on Doggy's back as a swing of his spear struck nothing. The capybeara had shifted to angle away from the worm. “Doggy? Buddy? We need to be able to hit the worm,” Nik regretted doubting his friend almost immediately. As the body of the worm snaked back toward them, Doggy pivoted to face the creature's side. The tooth-ringed maw came at them, but too late as the capybeara leapt to claw up the curve of their enemy’s mass. Nik held on, fingers gripped onto short, brown fur, and teeth struck flesh. Whiplash from the impact caused his fingers to slip, and he fell. He landed on his side, atop what he could only call the head of the eyeless worm. He dug claws into the worm to hold on as the worm flailed. The capybeara jumped over the worm’s mouth to land at his side. Doggy had led it into sinking its maw directly into its own flesh. “I’ll never doubt you again!” said Nik. Doggy roared in response and turned in tandem with Nik to run along the creature’s back. He struck
