Storyweaver’s List of Kobold Sayings and Colloquialisms This is a list of basic kobold phrases and the like that appear in several of my books, including The Worst Kobold And Three Kobolds in a Trenchcoat. You’ll see these often used by other authors in the kingdoms, as these are very common sayings for kobolds. There still will be some differences from clan to clan, just like humans have different sayings from city to city. This list is also far from all-inclusive, and includes several that may not have shown up yet. Bite me on the tail - A curse, similar to the human phrase 'I'm screwed'. Bite my tail - An insult, often a taunt. Blood Brother/Sister/Sibling - A kobold related to another kobold by blood, with at least one of the same parents. Different from Hatchling Sibling as seen below. Bonded - A kobold’s spouse. Bonded ring - A kobold wedding ring, placed on the ear. Two rings are normally made from the same batch of metal, and then specialized metal dyes can be added to have the ring match the colors of one’s bonded. I.e, a blue kobold who becomes bonded to a white kobold, will have a white bonded ring on his left horn. Clan - An entire underground city of kobolds. They normally number in the tens of thousands, and each clan can have anywhere from one to five dragons in charge of it. Claw - A high ranking official in a kobold clan, short for a dragon’s claw. Normally a claw had a specific area of expertise, such as the Claw of Hunting, Claw of Protection, or the Claw of the Hatchery. Depths/By the depths - A kobold swear. Similar to “What the hells” for humans. Egg twins - A very, very rare condition where an egg will have two kobolds. It occurs in less than in one in five thousand eggs. It tends to cause complications, and requires a lot of care to ensure the hatchlings survive. Fang - The highest ranking kobold or kobolds in a clan. There’s normally only one, but some clans can have a small group of them. The fang is generally the voice of the dragon, and any command a Fang gives is considered to be coming from the dragon’s mouth itself. From the dragon’s mouth/Heard from the dragon’s mouth - To hear something first hand. Good set of horns on his head - Smart, clever. Sometimes it can mean brave. Hatchery - Where kobold eggs are stored and cared for before hatching. Hatchling - A young kobold. Comes from the fact kobolds hatch from eggs. Hatching Day / Hatchday - The day a kobold emerges from their egg. Hatchling Ring - Similar to bonded rings, except a kobold will have a ring made to match the scale color of their child. These rings are made after the hatchling emerges from the egg so the craftsman knows the new child's scale color. Hatchling Brother/Sister/Sibling - Also can be called hatchery siblings. Kobolds who are raised in the same age group. Kobolds have a communal society, and kobolds born in the same cluster spend much of their time together. They are only ever related by blood if they are egg twins. Have steel horns - To be brave. Hole/Thrown in the hole - Kobold jail, or to be put in kobold jail. Though it is quite literally a deep hole underground. In your scales - Being naked. Earn a ring/Earn your ring - To complete a great task or accomplishment. Comes from when kobold earns a ring to place on their horns. Kobolds will place rings involving career accomplishment on the right horn, and rings involving getting bonded or having hatchlings on the left. There are slight variations as follows. Earn a gold ring - Successfully completed a near-impossible task. Kobolds who earn a gold ring are highly respected. Eternal Serpent - The creator of dragons and kobolds. Often said as a short prayer, such as “By the Eternal Serpent.” Long patrol - A patrol route taken above ground, normally by one or two specially trained scout kobolds. Move your tail - Move faster. Just like the human saying, only more literal for kobolds. Not worth a shed scale - Worthless. Nub-horn - Dumbass, stupid. Pulling my tail - Trying to fo
