A dozen blocks away from the coffee booth was the Lock Up “Inn”. Yes, the quotation marks are part of the name. Sleazy and cheap, it was four stories of dancing neon lights and questionable fluids. The “Inn” had been here since the beginning of Augment City, and for all intents and purposes, it was home. This was where Cake went, hugging the blue case like a life preserver. Only the bouncer was outside. Cake knew him and could stroll right inside, but he didn’t want to yet. First, he had to straighten out the reason why he left the coffee booth. His boss, Bezo, was friends with the “Inn’s” owner and liked to hang around the bar. Cake could tell him what happened directly. But the shoot-out wasn’t life-threatening enough without mentioning the grandma, and he couldn’t tell him about that, or his thieving days were over. Second, there needed to be a story for the blue case. There were a lot of housemates inside, and the more he looked at the case, the more expensive it got. Soft velvet facade, bronze gilded corners, and a gold lock that sparkled in sunlight. Spontaneously finding it at the side of the street was beyond unbelievable. Third, they were going to put him in a dress. It was- ‘HI CAKE!’ A girl shouted at his face, popping in front of him with big pink eyes. Cake screamed, tumbled over, and dropped the case to shield himself. To him, fire had suddenly rained down. ‘Sugar! Don’t look at me like that!’ He said, closing his own eyes only for the hallucinations to start spinning the world again. He dove toward the case and then stared in horror, seeing the golden latch broken. ‘Hmph! My peepers are a thing of beauty. A little appreciation would go far, you know.’ Sugar was pink. From her heart-shaped contacts, to the puffy dress with snow white frills, to the tiny butterfly clip. Sugar was pink. How’d she acquired such outfits was a question only the local cosplay store could answer. Cake stared at her pink lacy shoes, trying to keep from hyperventilating while making up a lie, ‘it’s just-’ She cut in. ‘Why are you standing out here like a loser? Where’d you get that suitcase? Why aren’t you at work?’ ‘I-I-I-’ The girl was tapping her foot as Cake stumbled over words. He would have been prepared to answer each question on its own. Coming out like a machine gun, there was no dodging to be done. It took a few seconds, but Sugar began to put the pieces together. ‘Wait,’ her foot stopped tapping, and she bent over to look Cake in the eye again. He forced himself to stare back, screaming silently at how close she was. ‘OH! Ohhhhhh!’ A spark of inspiration and an impish smile appeared on her face. ‘Sneaky. You’re lucky you’re cute.’ The girl pulled Cake up and began pulling away. ‘Come on, we'll go through the back.’ # There was no doubt that this was an unusual living situation. Cake made no illusions. Three orphans lived here, all adopted by the current Manager of the Inn. They lived on the fourth floor, which had the tiniest and therefore least-used rooms. Cake and Sugar were two of those orphan's. She was a wildcard to him, having been here longer. It seemed she lived in another, more important world, always busy and being called by the “Inn’s” other residents. The Manager, the one who adopted them, always seemed to mark her as a favorite, or at least that was how Cake felt. What was she doing outside? He wondered. Her being outside was just as suspect as him suddenly coming home from work. He couldn’t ask that right now, though. Cake got the feeling he was under her thumb. They reached the back door, whereupon Sugar gave it a swift kick that instantly opened it. Cake flinched only to realize that there was no one in the hallway. ‘A meeting's happening in the lounge, and they had the nerve to send me away,’ the girl explained, sticking out her tongue in disgust. 'Same time earlier, got banned on LiveLive for explicit content can you believe them?' Inside, the “Inn” was clean and clear. Red carpet on the floor, expensive-lo
